Summit Lake

Summit Lake is a favourite place my husband and I like to go each summer. This year we were a little late and caught some snow high up in the mountains. I love when it rains, the rain turns to snow higher up, and a lovely line appears on the mountain side between white and green trees. As winter approaches, this line moves down the mountain until the entire mountain is white. By then we are busily shovelling snow and putting cleats on the bottoms of our boots.

Winter Landscape

Well, the winter paintings have begun and there isn't even any snow on the ground. I think it's because I've been thinking a lot about my upcoming show in February at the Kootenay Bakery and Café Coop in Nelson. I just hope that people aren't tired of all the snow by then. Nelson is a fantastic tourist destination for anyone who loves to ski and we have some of the very best heli and cat skiing in Canada.

I myself do not downhill ski, but absolutely love the winter season. I love the way it changes the landscape in ways that no other season can. There is just something about the cold and the snow and the way it makes me feel. I suppose it brings out the child in me that likes to make angels in the snow and to build snowpeople. And there is nothing like the feeling of walking under the trees in the evening after a fresh snowfall when the landscape has truly been transformed into a winter wonderland.

Last Leaves of Autumn

I've been working on this painting on and off for a few weeks now trying to get the leaves and the feeling of fall just right. I've been working consciously to incorporate more visible movement into my paintings. I find sometimes there is a fine line between vigorous and gestural brush strokes and just plain messiness. But I'm working on it. The overall feeling of the piece is exactly what I was going for, which is nice. Not every piece works out that way.

The inspiration for this painting was taken from a photograph of a tree in my yard which has now long lost its leaves. I posted the photograph in celebration of the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend if you want to take a peek. I have, of course, used my artists' prerogative and enhanced the colours of the leaves quite a bit.

Front Page News!

This little gem actually made it to the front page of Etsy last night. An entire hour front and centre! What a wonderful surprise. This painting was originally part of a series entitled 'Lost in the Woods' in which I painted several wooded scenes meant to make one feel, well, lost in the woods. The original painting now resides in a private collection in Dublin, Ireland, however, it is available as an 8x10 print or as one of my Christmas/ Winter Season cards.

Other seasonal cards available are as follows:

To view purchase details for any of these cards, please click on the card name, or simply visit my online gallery: DreamGallery.etsy.com. All Christmas/ winter season cards are 4 for $12 until the end of December. All cards are printed on acid free cardstock using archival inks. Great for giving, great for framing as small pieces of art!

Tree of Life

Here is my latest offering. It was actually painted before my Artisan Market (a few weeks ago), however, poor weather conditions prevented me from taking it outside to photograph.

Today is actually the first day I have put paint to canvas since the market. When the event was over and done with I stood staring at the complete chaos of my studio not knowing where to begin, having dismantled most of the furniture in order to create a booth for my wares. I felt suddenly quite defeated and slipped into a sort of post pardum depression. Exhausted from the ordeal of a three day event, I had absolutely no energy to put my studio back together and set up my easel again until yesterday.

But I am happy to say I have since completed one painting and started another.
